2022/23 Buffalo Sabres Preview Predictions

by steve

Evidently the Buffalo hockey team, the Sabres (im told) start their season tonight. So lets write a short preview.

For some reason they just gave their head coach and general manager contract extensions. Don Granato, career loser, isnt disliked by the fanbase (if you can say th3 Sabres have one) but might actually be beloved. Because he isnt Phil Housley or the soccer idiot (Ralph "disaster" Krueger) I suppose. Kevyn Adams was widely panned as the GM when he was hired but has gotten some earned respect by not being Tim Murray (and not getting completely pantsed in the Eichel debacle).

But hey, Pegula is off pretending to be a successful NFL owner and his wife is still filming weekend at Bernie's 3. So why not reward these dudes for being not-the-last-guy embarrassing. I mean they did finish 11th in the Eastern Conference and 25 points out of a playoff spot (only 22 points out if they were in the West). Improvement!

Theyre +475 to make the playoffs, their over under pt total is 76.5. +2500 to win the division. Vegas aint buying it.

Everyone and their brother in the media is pretending to be positive, picking over point total but not to make the playoffs. Cute

Dahlin and Power need to be world beaters and this team of all 3rd line players needs them mostly all to play as 2nd line players. If that happens, id predict 76 points.

The goalies still suck

2022 Buffalo Bills Draft Review Grade

by steve

Before the long boring offseason starts lets review the Bills 2022 NFL Draft performance.

First, the picks:
Round 1. 23 Kaiir Elam CB Florida
Round 2. 63 James Cook RB Georgia
Round 3. 89 Terrel Bernard LB Baylor
Round 5. 148 Khalil Shakir WR Boise State
Round 6. 180 Matt Araiza P SD State
Round 6. 185 Christian Benford CB Villanova
Round 6. 209 Luke Tenuta OT Va Tech
Round 7. 231 Baylon Spector LB Clemson

Brandon Beane did a bit of everything in the draft. They traded up in the first, they traded back twice in the second and even drafted a punter with the first pick of the 6th round.

Somewhat surprisingly they drafted 8 players, 3 on offense, 4 on defense and the punt god.

Allegedly the receiver is a steal, the 3rd round LB is a tweener that seems to fit McDerr's style and the second corner might move to safety. Out of my 7 Bills needs heading into the draft, Beaner took 5 of the 7 I wanted.

The runningback Cook has pedigree and seems to be a playmaker in the passing game. Plus he wasnt a first round pick. Actually the Bills got multiple extra picks moving back twice and still got him. He seems like he will complement Singletary and Moss. I like it even if he only averaged 8 touches a game last year.

Elam fills a big need if he can start. The punter is a punter. Not sure about Shakir. He seems to be a gadget guy that will replace McKenzie eventually but isnt a big outside guy.

I wanted a big splash and to dump Tremaine Edmunds. Didnt happen. Beane didnt trade any big picks from future years and got a bunch of bodies. Not bad

Grade:
B-

Thursday, April 28, 2022

1st Round Pick Buffalo Bills Kaiir Elam CB

Bills used a 4th to move up 2 spots to take 20 year old cornerback Elam.

Grade C+

Dont love it but dont hate it.  Fills a need.

Final 2022 NFL Mock Draft

by Steve

Here is my beloved mock draft:
First here is our 4 man mock draft and Bills needs posts from earlier in this week and the mock draft round up review and draft predictions.

1. Jaguars - Travon Walker
2. Lions - Aiden Hutchinson
3. Texans - Ikem Ekwonu
4. Jets - Kayvon Thibadeaux
5. Giants - Charles Cross
6. Panthers Kenny Pickett
7. Giants - Sauce Garner

31. Bengals - Lewis Cine
32. Lions - Tyler Smith

2022 NFL Draft Predictions

by steve

Prediction time! The first round of the NFL Draft is mere hours away so lets print our predictions:

First here is our 4 man mock draft and Bills needs posts from earlier in this week and the mock draft round up review.

The Bills wont take a cornerback in the first round. Beane knows McDerr can find a CB anywhere. Look who started for them the last few years, 7th round Dan Jackson, Levi undrafted Wallace, UB Cam Lewis etc. Part of this is because Tre White is on the opposite side and part of it seems to be that McDerr can actually coach up a secondary.

Despite me wanting Beaneboy to package Tremaine Edmunds and make a move up for a stud WR there will be no big move today. They arent taking a runningback Thursday either.

Other rando predictions:
Skyy Moore isnt going in the first round.
Ditto for big boy George Pickens.
No quarterback will be drafted top 10 and only 2 go day 1.
No runningbacks
Under 6.5 wide receivers get drafted round 1.
The Jets fuck up the draft but get a high draft grade.
Ditto for the Giants.
The panthers and Lions also fuck up bad. Although, if they don't like a QB they shouldn't just take one to take one. But does anyone trust anyone at either of those organizations? No.

Who are the Bills going to draft PREDICTIONS:
Steve: Daxton Hill safety Michigan
Dubs: Kaiir Elam corner Florida
Coast: Breece Hall RB Iowa State
Wreck: Christian Watson WR SD State
Sano: Skyy Moore WR Western Mich

my druthers:
Go wide Receiver why not. Get weapons score points. I can live w a RB but dont love it.  Safety over corner, no oline first 2 days, or.. MAKE A SPLASH. Trade Edmunds and move up or just grade him and find a LB Friday.

Best bet is move back to early 2nd round, get Breece Hall and use the extra pick(s) to move up and get a WR somewhere early, then linebacker w an edmunds trade.

2022 Buffalo Bills Mock Draft Review

by Steve

Lets take a look at what the supposed paid professionals are picking for the Buffalo Bills in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Here is our 4 man mock draft and Bills needs posts from earlier in the week.

Dan Jermiah nfl.com
Breece Hall
I can't find another prospect capable of having a bigger impact for the Bills at this selection. Hall would be a nightmare for opposing defenses.
Grade C+

Peter Screager NFL network
Breece Hall RB Iowa St
I'm told Buffalo is going either running back or defensive back with this pick. Comped to Matt Forte, Hall is the choice.

Shockingly I am warming up to the idea of a RB. If this dude is a stud for four years and makes the offense better I can live with it. Is it wise? Is it a good value? Obviously not. Can a RB in any round be as good and a tenth of the price ? Sure. But Hall has a lot of boxes checked to aid the offense in a real way. Not picking up his 5th year option though hurts. Best bet is to trade back to early 2nd and hope hes there.
Grade C+

Andrew Booth
We know the Bills wanted Eric Stokes last year, but the Packers snatched him off the board. Cornerback hasn't been addressed since, so I expect that to be the pick here unless all viable options aren't available once again. The Bills need players who can defend all the great quarterbacks in the AFC, after all.

Starting a pattern of all corners jeez.
Grade C-

Mike Florio PFT

25. Bills: Trent McDuffie, cornerback, Washington.

They need help in the secondary, especially with Tre'Davious White returning from a torn ACL.

Uninspired

Grade: C

Dan Kelly The Ringer
Kaiir Elam
The Bills really don’t have any glaring needs but if they want to get over the hump in the AFC, taking an excellent cover corner here in Elam shouldn’t hurt. He’d pair nicely with Tre’Davious White to give Buffalo more talent in the back end.
Corner is a need but cant McDerr find one anywhere?
Grade C+

Jay Skurski TBN

Andrew Booth, CB, Clemson. In the end, the most logical position ends up being the pick for General Manager Brandon Beane. It’s hard to ignore the need in the Bills’ secondary, especially with the uncertainty around when Tre’Davious White will be ready to play coming off a knee injury. Booth was a second-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection in 2021 after finishing with 37 tackles, three interceptions and five passes defensed in 11 starts.

The final line of Booth’s nfl.com scouting report neatly summarizes why he makes sense for the Bills: “He needs to play more football, but his ball-hawking instincts, burst to close and toughness in run support will be very appealing for zone teams looking for an upgrade at cornerback.”

That sounds like a prospect who will fit in nicely to Sean McDermott's defense.

Didn't want to post this PAB's mock since he blocked us but i will any way. Booth a reach at 25
Grade D+

2022 NFL Draft Preview: Buffalo Bills Needs

by steve

The draft is at 8pm Thursday and its time to feed the beast. Here are the Bills needs heading into the 2022 NFL Draft. They are scheduled to pick at 11:15 Thur night.

Bills 2022 Draft Picks

Round 1: 25
Round 2: 57
Round 3: 89
Round 4: 130
Round 5: 168
Round 6: 185 (from Car) & 203
Round 7: 231

A perennial playoff team with a franchise quarterback and an allegedly great defense usually doesn't have a lot of holes. The 2022 Buffalo Bills fall into this exact description. Are there weaknesses in the roster? Of course, but no spot on the team is crying out for attention, which obviously is a great place to be.

Here is my ranking of biggest need on the current roster but not necessarily what position should b targeted first.

1. Cornerback
Tre White is coming off a late season ACL tear and wont be 100% to start the season. The other starting corner from 2021 plays for the Steelers and the position was all but ignored in free agency. Dane Jackson Cam Lewis et al might be serviceable but they are mid at best.

2. Wide Receiver
Diggs just got paid and Gabe Davis is emerging but behind that is a lot of question marks. McKenzie, Crowder, Kumerow, Stevenson, Hodgins?? Yikes.

3. Linebacker
Tre Edmunds needs to be traded or walk in free agnecy and thus a hole will be created. MLB isn't an important position but they'll still need bodies.

4. Safety
If Poyer doesn't get an extension this will be the number one need on the team. Not sure whay happen to that allegedly great tandem in the final 13 seconds vs KC but Hyde and Poyer will be tough to replace and improve on.

5. Tightend
Knox might want too much cash soon and bama boy OJH is only on a one year deal. Tommy Sweeney a bum.

6. Center
Sure Mitch Morse got an extension but he is old. Day 3 definitely.

7. Runningback
Singletary is ok and Moss is worse. A speedy straight line guy or a pass catching RB would make a difference.

Bills Get New Stadium, Buffalo & Fans Lose

by steve

Who asked for any of this? I've been to every Bills game (sans 2020) since 2004 and know dozens of Bills season ticket holders. You know the one thing they never asked for? A new more expensive stadium.

The State, the Bills and Erie County agreed to a $1.4 billion new stadium that will allegedly open in 2026 (yeah sure). The state pays $600m, county (one of the poorest in the US) pays $250m , the fans pay $300m w PSLs, and the NFL pays $200m.

Miraculously Terry Pegula, valued at $6.2 billion, who bought the Bills less than ten years ago for $1.3 billion and has since doubled in value, PAYS ZERO DOLLARS.

Incredible.

One complaint I do hear from fans is the rain and wind that ruins the in game experience.  So of course the new stadium is going to be covered right? Nope open air.

When was the last time you were at the current stadium on any day other than a Bills game? Try it some time. There are 2 bars (one changes names every 3 years), a gas station a couple motels and the beloved KK Mart.

So if we are going to give this guy a damn near $1,000,000,000.00 we are going to put it downtown where at least some spinoff development will occur with public transit right? Nope, it is going right across the street.

More details, 10,000 less seats, the Bills keep all parking, concessions, ticket sales etc oh and it has natural grass.

But at least we get some nice fancy renderings and all the plans have been laid out for the public to oogle at right? Nope, zero plans have been released! Not even one drawing.

But wait, there is more! PSLs. Yup every season ticket holder gets to pay $1500 (at least and likely more) per seat just to be able to buy their season ticket! And let me guess, prices wont double triple or quadruple.  And pigs fly.

So, we still get rain and wind, tickets won't cost $53 any more, I have to pay up front $1500+ and have to move to a much worse seat since there is little chance they'll have a cheap Labatt zone in the 200 level w great sight lines.

Oh and since it is way out in the burbs, open air, nothing around it, no public transit, basically it can only be used for 10 Bills games, some stadium tours, 3 concerts a year and a soccer game every other year it will sit empty for 325 days a year. Awesome.

So how did Terry bamboozle us so badly?

Three keys as far as I can tell. Create a sense of urgency,  get the local media (who is desperately dependent on the Bills for ad revenue, content etc) on your side, and pretend Terry might move the team.

Create Urgency
The stadium is going to collapse in just a few years!!!
Wait what? Surely they released the independent study that proves the upper deck is going to collapse and there is no way the current stadium could be renovated. No way they will let us continue to pile in to a stadium that will return back to the earth in a pile of dust at any time, right? Uh, nevermind i guess. Nope, private study, never released. Lets just take their word for it.

Get the local media on your side.
Local media to me is the 3 TV stations, wgr550 and the Buffalo News. Just scan the newspaper the last few weeks and you will find zero negative stories about it except maybe a Rod Watson column. The TV stations don't really do anything.  WGR550 will say negative things about the money on Schopp and the Bulldog but they nearly bite their tongues off not absolutely ripping the whole thing. The morning rubes are Terry cheerleaders but arent from here and are Jets & Giants fans (true).

Vaguely threaten to move the team.
Austin might want a team! Or Toronto! London! Oklahoma city???

So Terry Pegula, who owns the Sabres, Labatt House, Harbor Center and a few other things is going to move the Buffalo Bills out of town (not Texas, Jerry aint having it) to a foreign city with no football stadium and no fan base or pick a random city that isnt NY LA Chicago or Texas, again with no stadium built and no plans?

The Rams paid $550mil relocation fee to leave St Louis on top of a $790 mil lawsuit they settled with the city of St Louis to move to LA which had no other team yet and privately built a $5bil stadium. The Chargers paid $650mil relocation fee to the other NFL owners and the Raiders paid $378 mil relocation fee.

So Terry, who cant afford a hill of beans despite promising to drill an oil well if he needs more cash, is gonna shell out at least a billion dollars and abandon the city of Buffalo? He would surely have to sell all of his holdings because he wouldn't be allowed to step foot in this city again after that betrayal and never return, ever. Then build up a new fan base, a new brand and try to shakedown another municipality to build a stadium just because we refruse to give him $850 mil for a replica stadium across the street used 25 times a year?

Where the fuck has the planning by the politicians and community been the last 20 years? Where is the transparency?  The discussions? A colossal failure on all ends.

One thing I will give Terry credit for. The timing is perfect. The state and county are flush with cash from federal covid government payouts, the Seneca money (if they ever actually pay) and the team is really good.  Imagine them asking for this money and stadium after Doug Marrone's tenur.

Where is the loyalty to the die hard fans?

I fear the new stadium will be a soleless, shiny pile of junk. Over priced concessions, overpriced tickets and few real fans. No one cares about hanging out inside a stadium for an NFL game. No one sits down for a $25 burger inside a stadium during Bills v Chiefs when they just ate boozed and partied for 5 hours outside. Sure the seats are a bit close, the bathrooms arent abundant and some seats are metal. But that is what Buffalo is. We are losing it all. I hope Im wrong.
