I Hate Boston

-Coast

When I saw that a Sabres post had been written in mid June...mid baseball season, the month before training camp, and even worse, during the middle of the Euro 2008 elimination round (Portugal losing to Germany essentially eliminated me from the office Euro 2008 pool today in the first game), I knew I had to come up with something.

I hate the city of Boston, Massachusetts and especially it's sports team. Boston has separated itself from the field as my second least favorite sports city. I hate their basketball team, their baseball team (although I will still root for them when they play the Yankees), their hockey team, and of course I hope their football team gets hit with the bubonic plague.

Am I jealous? At first I thought I was. After all, after clinching the NBA championship, the city has won the world series twice, the super bowl three times and the NBA finals once since the turn of the century. That is six championships in eight years. The Bills, Sabres and Indians have a grand total of zero SINCE 1948. In the last four completed seasons of the four major sports, the city of Boston has a record of 219-111-12. This is a winning percentage of .660. They made the playoffs in all four sports. They won the championship in two of them and went undefeated in the other only to lose in a fluke super bowl. The Bills went 7-9 and lots of Buffalonians were happy with that. Are we that satisfied with mediocrity? The Sabres went to the Eastern Conference Finals and lost two years in a row but yet some Buffalonians think this is a success.

But then I got to thinking...am I really jealous? Winning so often kind of ruins the glory of winning. New York Yankee fans and Boston sports fans are so accustomed to it that it can't really have that same level of satisfaction when it happens, can it? Yankee fans are so used to winning that making the playoffs is not even an accomplishment but making the playoffs and losing is a failure. Yeah they will have their parade and celebration but only because they have to . They just had a parade in November. (editors note: they in these sentences referenced to the Boston Red Sox...obviously there was no parade in NY in November) I know that being a Bills fan can suck but imagine the feeling when they finally win it. The scene on Main Street will dwarf that of Boston and their 500 parades they have had.

Basically, F the city of Boston. Let them have their 6 rings in 8 years. Let them win so much it gets old for their fans.

On a side note, the New England Revolution are in first place right now in Major League Soccer at 8-3-3.

  1. first of all: winning a lot doesn't make you take it for granted... it's not like i'm relieved when the yankees make the playoffs. it is just expected to happen more. if that were true i wouldn't hate my life when the yankees lose a game in april. this is what you do, you take solace in the fact that you have never won and think that buffalo has the best fans ever because of it. yes, buffalo has great fans, it is a close-knit spots community... but that doesn't entitle you to judge other fans that have won a championship in the last 6 decades. i fucking hate boston at least as much as you do, but think about the 90s, it is basically a microcosm of the struggles that buffalo has had over a longer stretch and their fans didn't go away. you can't say that just because a city has a history of winning that they don't appreciate it as much.

secondly, the superbowl wasn't a fluke. the giants played the patriots twice, and both times played close games. they just put enough pressure on tom brady to get the job done. it's not the giants fault that no one else realized brady is a bitch when he gets hit... the rest of league had to have known, they just couldn't get the job done.

and lastly, the yankees would only have a parade bc they had to? are you kidding me? go to nyc after the yankees win their next world series and tell me they are only going through the motions bc it is a necessary step... that is one of the stupidest things i have ever read on this blog, and that is saying something

fuck boston! this was the best post in a while coast, i want to vomit when i see any bostonian let alone any of their sports teams. id root for the Pittsburgh pirates, the florida panthers, and the Detroit Lions over any Boston team. They make me sick.

  3. Wow alright...first of all relax...second of all, if you read the blog, then you would have realized that the comment that you said was the stupidest thing you have ever read said "New York Yankee fans and Boston sports fans are so accustomed to it that it can't really have that same level of satisfaction when it happens, can it?" This is ended with a question because I wouldn't know. This led to my point about the parade, in relative terms, the parade would be on less of a grand scale if you have them multiple times per year, aka twice in 7 months. Also, I did not even take a shot at the Yankees or their fans although I could take a shot if I wanted to at 90% of them. Besides you, I don't think I have met more than one or two Yankee fans who actually care until October. I am sure their are a lot more closer to the city, but around here, out of all the people that sport their Yankee hats all the time, I would bet that the majority of them don't really care whether or not they win. But, when you see someone wearing a Bills hat, you know they really care, that is my point. I just said that making the playoffs for the Yanks and losing for them is a failure because they are so used to winning which is fair to say. For us, making the playoffs would be a huge accomplishment. I don't know where I took a shot at the Yankees. And as for the Giants, Patriots super bowl, you make a good point about the Giants, they matched up real well against the Pats.

  4. Your generalizing... I get your points and I understand but as a Bostonian who grew up seemingly surround by lack luster performances and the Red Sox constantly letting the floor fall out from under them... Winning is still too sweet and new even now.

  5. I am sure it is sweet...my point is this: compare the feeling when the Red Sox won it all in 2004 to the Red Sox winning it all in 2007. Compare the third Patriots championship to that first one. I understand that it is still sweet to win but is it as sweet as that time you finally broke through?

  6. i think all wins are independent of each other... i know that i was just as happy in '98 and '99 and 2000 when the yankees won the world series as i was when they won it in '96. think about it... (you were young when it happened so maybe it wasnt the same) when the bills made it to the superbowl every year, did you expect them to get there every year and not care as much each year they did it?

for boston it was probably a bigger deal in 2004 for the older people that were wondering if they would ever see a world series championship, but i personally think it feels equally good each time.

say the bills win the superbowl this year, you are going to feel the same way about them going into next year... maybe you'll have higher expectations, but you'll still be just as excited and happy when they win.

as for what i said... i said it was ONE of the stupidest things i have ever read on THIS blog, and i was referring to "Yeah they will have their parade and celebration but only because they have to."

  9. Nothing beats that 2004 win... Nothing in my life beats that moment. It might sound sad or cliche but that changed EVERYTHING.
In Boston most people drown in their sorrows. They feed on negative energy and pout far too often. It resembles that same old school puritan beliefs from way back way... we are used to things just sucking in the end and the last few years have been just proof that we dont have to hate outselves. It sucks that it comes off as a bunch of INSANE assholes.
